I thought the game didnвЂ™t do a great job of explaining who was who - I couldnвЂ™t keep track of whether I was friends with Hong Zhou and enemies with Cao Hong, or vice-versa, and the fact the game never really explained who the other factions were as far as I could tell we were all vying to reunify China. ThereвЂ™s a lot going on in Three Kingdoms and I found the screen to be cluttered and confusing, with too much information at times, especially in some of the larger battles, although the veteran strategist will likely find it to be helpful in planning their moves. Source: Supplied.Д«eing set in 191AD, your military unit options are fairly basic for the most part there were no really cool units that made me think вЂњOh, I canвЂ™t wait to unleash these on my unsuspecting foesвЂќ, although I fully expect they will show up in DLC or expansions down the road. Again, this is was purely a personal preference and I can completely see why the developers have included it, ensuring they keep as many players as happy as possible.Д¬haracter development is important in Romance mode, with RPG-like elements helping shape destinies and make a big difference to the game. I tried again with Records mode and had a better time with it, it was closer to the Total War experience I love from previous entries in the series, with a focus on units and traditional military tactics and strategy. Some of the innovations were good, though - I did like the way your generals can engage in one-on-one duels with their enemy counterparts, which was a nice way of making them more significant elements of the battlefield and the game generally. I opted for Romance first - because who doesnвЂ™t love a good historical epic? - but quickly found myself getting lost in character development side of things the change from the faction-focused nature of previous games wasnвЂ™t entirely my cup of jasmine tea.

The Romance mode focuses on your generals as individual heroes who can do impressive feats, develop skills and engage in single combat with other heroic individuals, while the Records mode is more like a traditional Total War game.
